Tikkun
Olam (Repair of the World) is an important value
of the Temple Beth Torah community. We strive
to integrate both Tzdekah and Tikkun Olam into
our religious school, our Temple activities and
our community work. Our children collect Tzdekah
every Sunday and select charities in which to
donate the money. Our Temple members contribute
needed kosher food to the Family Table Program.
Our B'nai Mitzvah candidates do a Mitzvah Project
and some participate in the Kesher 13 Program
with Jewish Family Service of Metrowest.
Beginning in 2006 Temple Beth Torah members have
participated in an annual Mitzvah Day. We have
hosted an American Red Cross Blood Drive each
year. Members and their children participate in
projects at the Temple (for example, baking cookies
for food shelters, decorating journals for children
in hospitals, and decorating and assembling Wellness
Boxes for children and adults undergoing cancer
treatment). A large number of members fan out
into the community doing activities such as outside
cleanup at low income housing, gardening at a
senior center, preparing a week's worth of food
for a family homeless shelter and working at local
food pantries.
The participants have found that on Mitzvah Day
they truly can make a difference!
In addition, our newly implemented (2010) Chaverim
Society supports initiatives ongoing throughout
the year. Members of our temple host monthly Community
Suppers at the First Unitarian Church in Milford.
Our
member volunteers also host families at the Christ
the King Church in Holliston 4 times throughout
the year with food and companionship via the Interfaith
Hospitality Network. Tikkun Olam this year is
also sponsoring Intergenerational Programming
where our young children will have planned interactions
with the Senior Citizen community.
The Tikkun Olam Committee is looking for new members.
